Archaeology: Associations, Societies & Institutes

The professional association for southern African archaeologists.

The PAA aims to bring together prehistorians, palaeontologists and geologists from across the the continent to discuss information and ideas, create contacts between students, researchers and practitioners, and to facilitate and promote inter-African collaboration.

SHA promotes scholarly research and the dissemination of knowledge concerning historical archaeology. The society is specifically concerned with the identification, excavation, interpretation, and conservation of sites and materials on land and underwater. Geographically the society emphasizes the New World, but also includes European exploration and settlement in Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

The Society of Africanist Archaeologists is an organization of archaeologists, researchers from associated disciplines and others who share an interest in African archaeology and African societies.

The South African Archaeological Society, also known as ArchSoc, is a registered non-profit organisation. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in archaeology. The Society promotes archaeological research in southern Africa and makes the results available to its members and the public through lectures, outings, tours and publications.

Founded in 1879, the AIA is North America's oldest and largest organization devoted to the world of archaeology. Members include professional archaeologists, corresponding members, students, and enthusiasts, all united by a shared passion for archaeology and its role in furthering human knowledge.

The Council for British Archaeology is an educational charity working throughout the United Kingdom to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

The core business of the HSRC is to conduct large-scale, policy-relevant, social-scientific projects for public-sector users, non-governmental organisations and international development agencies.

For 25 years, researchers from the Institute have scoured the Maluti Mountains of the Free State and the Drakensberg Mountains of Kwazulu-Natal/Eastern Cape, seeking out and analysing rock paintings making it amongst the best understood of the world’s rock arts.

SAHRA is a statutory organisation established under the National Heritage Resources Act, No 25 of 1999, as the national administrative body responsible for the protection of South Africa’s cultural heritage.
