Can information science shape the future of digital transformation? This question will take centre stage at the fourth University of South Africa Biennial International Conference on Library and Information Science in Africa (UNILISA) Conference, a groundbreaking event designed to explore how information science can drive innovation, collaboration and societal advancement in a fast-evolving digital world.
In a unique move to activate excitement and engagement, UNILISA kick-started the conference build-up with a high-energy Fun Walk held on 14 March 2025. Far more than just a fitness activity, the walk served as a conference activation event, raising awareness about the conference while promoting unity, wellness and academic camaraderie. Supported by Unisa Wellness, the event reminded everyone that collaboration – both physical and intellectual – is vital to shaping a meaningful digital future.

“This Fun Walk was about igniting conversations, building connections and setting the tone for what promises to be a truly dynamic conference,” said Professor Mpho Ngoepe, Executive Director of Unisa Library and Information Services (LIS). “As we walk together towards this event, we also walk towards a future where information science plays a central role in solving societal challenges.”
The conference, themed Information Science for Futuristic Scholarship and Practice: Partnerships and Collaborations Across Boundaries Towards Society 5.0, will gather academics, students and industry professionals to explore digital transformation’s real-world impacts on education, research and society. Dr Makutla Mojapelo, acting Chair of the Department of Information Science, pointed out: “We brought together experts from diverse fields during the planning stages to ensure that the conversations we host reflect a broad range of voices and experiences.”
A core focus will be on the Society 5.0 concept, a Japanese vision of a human-centred, AI-powered society where technology enhances daily life. But as the UNILISA Conference will explore, Africa’s journey towards this vision presents unique challenges and opportunities. How does digital transformation play out in local contexts where access, equity and capacity-building remain pressing issues?
“For me, this is about more than technology,” said Zama Msomi, a postgraduate student in Information Science. “It is about what these changes mean for ordinary South Africans – in our schools, libraries and communities. I am excited to be part of a space where those issues will be unpacked.”
Voices from the industry also point to the need for grounded, practical conversations. “Digital buzzwords are everywhere,” said Eunice Nemutanzhela, an electrician. “What excites me is seeing how this conference will move beyond the hype and tackle issues of access, ethics and skills development in the digital age.”
Adding to its appeal, UNILISA 2025 introduces new experiences to promote deeper learning and networking. A gala dinner will create a space for thought leaders and industry experts to connect, while sector excursions will expose participants to real-world applications of information science innovations.
The conference officially runs from 1 to 4 April 2025, with Lightning Talks on 31 March offering a platform for emerging voices to pitch fresh ideas and bold solutions.
As the countdown continues, organisers are urging scholars, professionals and students not to miss this opportunity to be part of shaping the future of information science. “The digital revolution is moving fast. The question is, are we leading or following?” Mojapelo challenged.
Registration is open now, with limited space available. For more details and to secure your place at the forefront of digital innovation, visit the official UNILISA Conference 2025 website.
