The Unisa Library signed an agreement with Elsevier offering Unisa authors the opportunity to publish gold open access in designated Elsevier journals. The agreement commenced in July 2023 and is a 3-year agreement, 2023 - 2025. 

Corresponding Unisa authors have access to publish open access to over 1,660 subscription-based journal titles in the ScienceDirect Freedom Collection. The options for publication are as follows: 

  • full gold open access publishing in all hybrid journals 
  • discount on gold open access Article Processing Charges in all gold Elsevier journals
How to submit your article for open access publishing
  1. Once the journal accepts your article, you will receive an email containing a link to the “post acceptance author journey”.
  2. You will be asked to review your affiliation and funder details. Based on this information, you will see personalised publishing options including the option to publish under the agreement.
  3. The corresponding author selects open access and confirms the license type (e.g. CC-BY).
  4. Your institution will validate your eligibility for the agreement
  5. The cost of the APC will be indicated on a table for authors who have declared their affiliation. The indication will either be none (no payment required) or the remaining discounted APC to be paid.
  6. Affiliated Unisa authors who publish in journals that still require the payment of an APC amount, should make arrangements for payment before submission of the article.
