Gender and Sexuality studies: Internet sites

Unisa Open is a portal to help students, staff and any OER users and producers worldwide to source high-quality resources. It provides a space for conversation and a starting point for those just making their acquaintance with OER.

These pages aim to provide you with markers to find the resources that suit your needs: African, South African and international OER sites and search engines.

The composition, powers and functions of the CGE are set out in Act 39 of 1996. The functions include monitoring and evaluating the policies and practices of government, the private sector and other organisations to ensure that they promote and protect gender equality; reviewing existing and upcoming legislation from a gender perspective; commissioning research and making recommendations to parliament or other authorities.

Gender DynamiX is the first African based organisation solely focusing on the transgender community. Aim of the site is to provide help, advice and information for those who seek to adjust their lives to live in the opposite gender role, and to provide resources, information and support to trans folks, their partners, family employers and the public.

Gender Links is recognised globally for bringing together a coalition of gender NGOs that campaigned for the elevation of the the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Declaration on Gender and Development into a Protocol with 28 targets to be achieved by 2015. GL coordinates the Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance that brings together national coordinating networks, regional theme clusters and interest groups to lobby for the implementation of the Protocol, Southern Africa's roadmap for achieving gender equality.

The African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town is a teaching, learning and research institute which focuses on issues of gender and development on the African continent. Renowned for collaborative research projects that marry theory, practice and activism, the AGI has delivered innovative integrated outcomes on gender justice, sexuality and human rights, peace and conflict studies and capacity building in relation to gender and women’s studies knowledges.

One of the most popular women's studies web sites in the world. Contains documents and links to quality information which represent the perspective of previous editors on women's studies. Interdisciplinary, integrating insights from many different experiences and perspectives.

The Feminist Theory Website provides research materials and information for students, activists, and scholars interested in women's conditions and struggles around the world. the site has three parts: various fields within feminist theory; different national or ethnic feminisms; and individual feminists. These parts are updated and expanded regularly.

Feminist reflection on internet policies. Objectives of this site are to develop information resources for gender and ICT advocates, civil society organisationsi and policy makers; to raise awareness among women’s movements, regarding gender and ICT policy issues; and to empower women’s organisations and networks to take action on ICT policy issues and develop ICT policy that meets their needs.

Includes over 25 million research articles and other scholarly documents preserved in the Internet Archive. The collection spans from digitized copies of eighteenth century journals through the latest Open Access conference proceedings and pre-prints crawled from the World Wide Web

The Lesbian Herstory Archives is home to the world's largest collection of materials by and about lesbians and their communities. Projects to digitize audio as well as image collections were started in 2008 and will be be made available from this site

Womenwatch is the central gateway to information and resources on the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women throughout the United Nations system. The portal contains a directory of resources on selected topics including the critical areas of concern of the Beijing Platform for Action, statistics and indicators, gender mainstreaming and online clearinghouses on themes currently on the United Nations global agenda, such as climate change.
