Welcome to Florida Science Library

This Libguide has been created to guide the Florida Science Library clients, on some of the most important library services and resources available to support Teaching, Learning and Research.

Science Library is your Information Partner in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, and College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Laboratories are available on Campus, for experimental learning.

Florida Science Library is situated at Florida Science Campus  G.J. Gerwel building, University of South Africa, Christiaan de Wet Road & Pioneer Avenue, Florida Park.

Library Hours

January to November:
Mon - Fri: 07:45 to 16:00
Saturdays closed until further notice.

December
Mon - Fri: 07:45 to 16:00
Saturdays & Holidays closed

Note: Science Library currently under construction: Clients will be informed in time when services resume.

 

How Many Books Can I Borrow

  • Undergraduates: 8 items
  • Postgraduates: 16 items, including audio-visual
  • Undergraduate music students: 12 items
  • Postgraduate music students: 20 items
  • Other membership categories: 8 items

Loan period of borrowed Library materials:

Books can be renewed 3 times, and loan period differs by user levels of study. Library can recall any borrowed books, regardless due date. Late returns will accumulate fines, that can block further Library usage.

Information desk, Circulation desk & Reserved Collection Services

Information desk is situated on the 2nd floor to assist all clients with Library related inquiries. Circulation/Lending service desk is situated on the 1st floor for lending inquiries. Reserved collection desk is situated on the 1st floor with reserved books for two hours loans. RFID, machine available inside the Library and Book Drop outside the Library. Study Carrels and Research Commons services available in the new library. Study areas available on 2nd floor, and reference shelves on both floors.                                                                                                                       

Library training information

Library training is offered in the library as per online bookings. Library Training Schedule is available online, Training is done   via Ms TEAMS. One-on-One bookings and group training can be arranged and confirmed on time. WIFI, connection is available on campus and off campus for registered students to access online study materials.

Google Scholar Citation

Google Scholar Citations provides a way for authors to keep track of the citations to their articles. It enables you to see who is citing your research (various tyoes of publications) by giving , graph citations over time and computing several citation metrics. This is done by creating a citation profile on Google Scholar which make you discoverable to other researchers.  

Create a citation profile on Google Scholar and link your research publications to your profile to become e-visible.

Plagiarism

All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by a student is expected to be the result of his/her own work.  The University views acts of copyright infringement and plagiarism as a serious offence. Plagiarism is the act of taking words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting it as your own. It is a form of theft which involves a number of dishonest academic activities. The Disciplinary Code appears in the my Studies Brochure and is given to all students at registration.  Students are advised to study the Disciplinary Code, especially chapter 3 (1.19).
