Accredited journals are research outputs that are recognised by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) because it meets specified criteria (eg. peer reviewed) and therefore qualify for subsidy by the DHET. If academics publish in accredited journals selected from the DHET lists, they receive subsidy and recognition for the articles. Peer reviewed conference proceedings, books or chapters in books can also be submitted for subsidy. The DHET subsidy for conference proceedings, books or chapters is usually less than that of journal articles.
The DHET's Approved List is compiled annually from international and national journals. Journals included in these lists are considered accredited and are taken into account when government subsidy is granted to universities for scientific publication of research output. The following lists of journals are important in the identification of journals in which to publish.
